Spasticity Clinic

About Spasticity Clinic

The spasticity clinic is a specialied interdisciplinary clinic led by a rehabilitation physician.  Its purpose is to treat individuals with either upper or lower limb spasticity as a result of a broad spectrum of neurological conditions such as stroke, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, dystonia causing limb contractures and movement disorder problems.

Limb spasticity and dystonia can affect a person's functional ability and cause impaired coordination, poor motor control, weakness and fatigue.  It can lead to permanent contracture, resulting in immobilised joints and further complications unless treated.

Botulinim toxin injections are used in combination  with physiotherapy and occupational therapy to improve function and care burden by minimising the contractures, improving activities of daily living and easing the care provided to people with these conditions.  Botulinium toxin injections can also assist with pain reduction in some cases due to indirect and direct action from the Botulinium Toxin over the areas treated.
