Dr Phoebe Slape - Robotic Assisted Therapy
A new therapy age – successful robotic assisted therapy trials
The robotic rehabilitation and assistive technologies market is gaining momentum and achieving impressive results across the globe.
At Eden Private Hospital, we focus on innovation and integrating the latest technology into our programs. We were happy to trial robotic-assisted therapy so that our patients can achieve outcomes far beyond the industry standard. Following a successful robotic-assisted therapy trial, Eden Private Hospital has invested in a range of robotic and computer-assisted therapy devices.
Our hospital’s clinical lead and director of rehabilitation, Dr Phoebe Slape, and allied health team worked collaboratively to successfully introduce robotic therapy into our traditional rehabilitation programs, helping patients reach their rehabilitation goals faster – bringing innovative variety and depth to our rehabilitation capability.
Combining robotic-assisted rehabilitation with traditional therapies.
At Eden Private Hospital, we are using robotic-assisted therapy to supplement our conventional, pre-existing, multi-disciplinary rehabilitation therapy. The use of both robotic and traditional therapies enables our patients to experience the best possible therapeutic results within the shortest time frame possible.
We have now included robotic assisted rehabilitation into existing in-patient and day therapy programs at Eden Private Hospital.
Meet our robotic-assisted rehab heroes
Myro
MYRO®´s sensor-based surface enables task-oriented rehabilitation with real objects, trains the patient’s cognitive abilities, and improves motor abilities of the upper extremity. Therapeutic games are controlled intuitively by touch, force application or object displacement and rotation.
Amadeo
With AMADEO®, patients train various aspects of the grasping movement and finger extension. Patients who are barely able or unable to grasp can perform hundreds of robot-assisted grasping movements. Active participation of the patient’s affected hand is promoted by biofeedback and assist-as-needed interactions.
Tyrostation
The TYROSTATION is home to all individual components of PABLO® and TYMO® and also provides a perfect ergonomic adaptability for every patient.
Tymo
TYMO® is a versatile tool for measuring and practice of force, balance, and postural control. Data from the Posturography is the basis to plan the therapeutic intervention. Different therapy options to strengthen stability and symmetry for the upper and lower extremities as well as for the trunk can be applied in a playful manner.
Pablo Upper Limb & Lower Limb
PABLO® Gait, our sensor-based gait analysis and training system, precisely measures and tracks parameters that are critical for the proper selection of the most effective gait therapy.
TyroServer is also available.
Please contact our rehab team for more information on how these devices can assist you with your rehabilitation goals.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is robotic-assisted therapy / robotic rehabilitation?
Robotic-assisted therapy utilises computer-assisted therapy devices, software and applications to provide patients with intensive rehabilitation that engages them physically and cognitively.
Robotic rehabilitation successfully blends principles of rehabilitation with robotics, virtual reality and gamification, engaging patients with the three components of robotic assisted therapy – intensity, dose and motivation.
Who does robotic-assisted rehabilitation help?
Whether stroke, spinal cord injury, Parkinsons or Multiple Sclerosis; our sensory robotic rehabilitation devices can be applied with a variety of symptoms to improve and enhance recovery.
Robotic assisted therapy focuses on the following:
- Finger and hand therapy
- Cognition and visual scanning
- Balance
- Gait analysis
- Upper limb and lower limb function
Robotic-assisted rehabilitation helps therapists and patients to do the right things at the right time, regardless of location, indication and phase of rehabilitation.
What are the benefits of robotic assisted therapy.
Patients using robotic-assisted therapy have seen improvement in patient functional deficit resulting from stroke, traumatic brain injury, MS, Parkinsons and, musculoskeletal and spinal conditions.
There are numerous benefits to utilising robotic-assisted therapy in your road to rehabilitation:
- Allows you to build on the foundations of traditional rehabilitation
- Increase in repetition of movement, compared to traditional, is important in neuroplasticity and recovery.
- Provides more stimulus, more repetition and more rehab therapy time for patients
- Devices are user-friendly and provide instant feedback to help keep you motivated and engaged
Patient testimonials on robotic-assisted therapy
Eden Private director of rehabilitation, Dr Phoebe Slape, said the results and feedback from patients who have trialled the robotics technology has been overwhelmingly positive.
"One of Eden’s young stroke survivors said she felt she completed her exercises much more comprehensively on the devices than she did in traditional therapy sessions and we had a patient with multiple sclerosis tell us she felt significant benefit from the couple of weeks of the trial," she said.
"Evidence shows repetition aids recovery and, across the board, patients find the robotics not only challenges but engages them to keep working towards their goals, with gaming and virtual reality incorporated to aid in motivation."
Patient feedback
'It's a fun way to do rehabilitation and much more stimulating and motivational than traditional treatment.'
'The robotic-assisted therapy made the treatment go faster and it was more rewarding.'
'I was surprised at how good the equipment was and how quickly it made a difference to my grip strength and dexterity.'
How to add robotic-assisted therapy to your rehabilitation
Ask your general practitioner or specialist to refer you to our program (see below).
The new robotics will be available to inpatients, day patients and outpatients, with those who are uninsured able to access a package of sessions, tailored to their individual needs.
Robotic-assisted rehabilitation is also available to patients under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and other funding schemes.
Eden Private Hospital, the longest operating hospital on the Sunshine Coast, is licensed to provide level five rehabilitation, offering intensive programs to patients across all age groups.
